HUNTINGDON GYMNASTS IN WINNING WAYS!
Huntingdon Gymnastics Club was well represented at the British Womens’ Championships, held in Guildford last weekend. Beijing Olympian, Marissa King, was on good form, taking her first major all around medal by winning bronze over four apparatus, with Becky Downie of Notts taking the overall title, and Rebecca Wing of Heathrow, the silver. King, 18, qualified for 3 finals and won Gold on Vault, a British Title on her specialist apparatus, also competing a clean routine on bars to take bronze, with a creditable 4th place on beam to round off a very successful weekend.
Teammate Claire Stock, also worked superbly, competing with stability to score 49.8 overall, enough for 7th place against the best seniors in Great Britain. A 5th place in the Beam final will see her status as an England International maintained and will provide a great boost in her quest to gain Commonwealth selection in 2010. Kati Simpson finished 16th overall and was 6th in vault final, and Emma White was 15th all around with Charlotte Mckenna finishing 27th in the junior category.
Coaches Adam Folwell and Monica Boru were pleased with the result and will now look to continue the progress over the coming months as King fights to gain selection for the World Championships in London this October, and the other girls challenge for the Commonwealth Games in Delhi next summer.
Ahmahd Thomas performed well in his first major International after competing on 5 apparatus in the World University Games, held in Belgrade last week. His performance helped the British Students to 13th place from 23 nations, with Japan taking the overall title. Great Britain’s Beth Tweddle took Gold on Bars and Floor, and now looks on course for a great result at the London Worlds. With Max Bennet and Cameron Mackenzie flying to Finland for the European Youth Olympic Festival next week, Huntingdon Gymnastics Club looks set to maintain it’s reputation as a major force in British Gymnastics.
