Olympians Daniel Keatings and Louis Smith look on track for their forthcoming European Championships in Italy next week following a successful performance at the final selection event, The London Open. Keatings performed well over 4 apparatus with a few errors on pommels and floor but enough difficulty to secure all around Gold, while teammate Smith finished .05 behind for an unexpected but well deserved Silver. Bronze was shared by Dudley based Kristian Thomas and Hinkley’s Evgeny Gryschenko. Smith completed a top difficulty exercise on pommel horse to take the top score with 15.9, a great warm up for his European Campaign in Milan at the beginning of April. Clubmate Luke Folwell took the highest combined score for his 2 vaults, whilst Ahmahd Thomas gained a personal best of 81.1 for 9th place overall. Cameron Mackenzie performed a complex parallel bar routine that helped secure 14th place with 78.1.
The under 16 section was won by Max Whitlock of South Essex with Huntingdon’s Sam Oldham taking all around silver and Clubmate Max Bennet working well to secure bronze in what was a high quality field of gymnasts from around the UK. Alex Brailsford rounded off a great day for the Club by finishing 8th in a field of 26.
Head Coach, Paul Hall, was pleased with the performance: This was excellent preparation for our 3 seniors who head off to Milan next week and also shows the potential for our juniors to fight for places on the European Team for 2010. I am very impressed by Louis’ all around result, proving that he is not just a quality gymnast on Pommel Horse, but a solid worker across all 6 disciplines.’
