Last summer Huntingdon Gymnastics Club applied to the Myplace fund provided by Central Government for a substantial grant toward our planned extension. Unfortunately we have now learned that our application has been unsuccessful. We will reapply when the next phase of funding becomes available but the dealy to the completion of the new hall could be critical.
‘We need to have more space in time for Louis, Daniel and our other potential star performers to be able to go up a whole gear before London 2012’ says Tracy Crosland, Chair of the Trustees at the Club. ‘Currently the gym is packed to the rafters with young gymnasts all keen and eager to take part in one of the most popular participation sports in the country. Our young stars are brilliant and are a real example to the little ones but it is simply not possible for them to compete on the same level as the Chinese or the Americans whilst training in this busy space.’
‘We have other applications in the pipeline but the Myplace grant would have brought in a large part of the funding for the Phase 2 Extension which includes the new hall and community facilities, and we are very, very disappointed.’
‘Myplace is supposed to channel funding down to the grass roots so that young people can have first class facilities but the complexity of the application process is mind boggling. As a community organisation we would have been up against County Councils, major charities and the like all bidding for the same funds. Organisations
